I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

A lot of appliances and fixtures have service valves that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have a valve below or beside the cistern. If you can’t locate a valve, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains shutoff tap to cut off all water to your house.

Once you have stopped the problem from getting worse, give our emergency plumber a call, at any hour of the day or night. We will be there rapidly to solve the problem.

While you wait, start cleaning up any water, position a bucket to catch drips, and remove important things from the affected area. If the property water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves also.

Find a piece of twine of some type, and knot it onto the tap aerator so that it hangs down to the bottom of the skink or basin. The drips will run along the twine and flow off quietly.
