I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main water shutoff valve for your property. In the meantime, begin cleaning up any water, position a bucket to catch any drips, and remove important possessions from the area. If the mains water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.
